What’s a good housewarming gift to send to my best friend?

March 30, 2010 | In: New Home Gifts

My best friend and her fiance just moved to LA a few days ago from the east coast, and I want to have a gift delivered to them.

I was thinking of just a nice plant or flower bouquet, but I don’t know what kind. If I send roses, what color? Is there any kind of plant that symbolizes this kind of thing?

I can’t think of any other ideas as far as things they need for their house goes…can you?

A gift card to a home store. A gift card to Home Depot would be a great gift. Don’t get flowers. They don’t last long especially roses. Get them something that they can really use.

~~When we bought our house my Grandfather bought us a small tree and we planted it in our back yard. He has passed, but the memory of him lives on in the little tree.

Some sort of nice plant or bulbs which could be planted in their backyard would be a lasting gift. If shipping is expensive, you can search for a nursery on Yahoo yellow pages for one which delivers close to them.~~

I loved the gift cards I received when I moved into my first home. If that’s too impersonal for you, maybe you could try a lovely vase or picture frame from Pottery Barn or Crate and Barrel.

Z Gallerie also has some really beautiful things, like candleholders and bowls. http://www.zgallerie.com/c-15-decorative-accessories.aspx

Z Gallerie also has these great monogrammed guest soaps and guest towels that are really elegant. http://www.zgallerie.com/pc-5270-109-monogram-guest-towels-soap-set.aspx

Another idea is a set that has everything you will need for whipping up a hot beverage. Winter housewarming gifts of this kind should include something edible, like a hot chocolate mix, mulling spices for cider, or a special tea or coffee blend, as well as something that will last, like a beautiful pair of mugs or teacups.

Or how about a beautiful, soft and comfy chenille or cashmere throw? You can find these everywhere — including TJMaxx, Overstock.com, amazon.com, Bed, Bath and Beyond.

You could hint around to your friend and ask what kinds of things they have gotten for the house, and what sorts of things they still need to find out if there is any sort of thing they could use. However, it is hard to shop for this kind of thing when you don’t know how they’re going to decorate, what they have already, etc. A gift basket would be a very nice idea, and you could find one with things in it that you know your best friend and her fiance would enjoy. I found this web page (http://www.greatarrivals.com/group.cfm?gid=11&stateful), and it has really beautiful baskets at an affordable price, but search on yahoo for “housewarming gift basket” and you will get a lot of results to choose from. Or be creative put one together yourself! Make sure that you include a personal note for them, I’m sure that is the part of the gift that they will enjoy the most! Good luck!
