I was invited to go to a coworkers birthday party out of town. I speak to her regularly on the phone and we communicate via email for work. She’s turning 31 and I know absolutely nothing personal about her. Of course I have to bring a gift…I wanna play it safe but it’s gotta have some class! Help, please!

Get her something general like a gift card to a book store (i.e. Borders carries books, magazines and gifts) or ask your co-workers for ideas.

You barely owe the person a “Congratulations”, let alone a gift, and it’s silly of grown adults to have such expectations from professional colleagues. This is a brand new acquaintance, so a nice “Happy Birthday” said to her is quite sufficient. Save your gifts for your actual friends and family, not fake friendships at work.

I would recommend a big screen TV. They are giving them away for free on Craiglist (everyones getting plasma these days). 50 inches at least should do.

Something generic and inexpensive should be more than enough. A scented candle, picture frame, calendar, or desk ornament with a nice card should be plenty.

How about a cinema or theatre token?

I always get flowers for people when I’m in that position.

I would say a gift card would be your best bet. I would suggest B.Dalton, Starbucks, Applebee’s, Target, Pottery Barn, etc.
