i recommend cloth diapers-not for the use of a diaper for for burp rags…they save the day.
otherwise you could always get an outfit from old navy or something.
bibs, shoes, socks,
leapfrog toys are always good.

Do not let pigs with the first remark hurt you.
Rule of thumb, dont get anything with small parts. Or removable pieces that are small.
Maybe a shape sorter, they are great for the baby to learn congnitive thinking. Here is a link, just click on the correct age and tons of age appropriete items

Great big Mega Blocks and Legos are good for that First Birthday. They make big Legos in girlie colors that I’m sure she would love, too. Toys R Us is terrific, most malls have a KB Toys, Target & Wal-Mart have good selections of toys also. Most toys have the ages listed on them….it’ll say ages 6 months and up, or 12 months and up so you can be sure to find one that is age appropriate.
Have fun!

I think children’s books are a great way to welcome a little one to the world. It might not seem terribly original, but with all of the wonderful authors, you can really personalize it and pick books that they’ll relate to later. I have a old friend from high school who had a little boy a couple of years ago and I put together a little “welcome” gift from him. I was very touched to hear that one of those books is her little boy’s very favorite now and that he asks her and her husband to read it to him every night! I love to hear things like that because books have such a great power. They do for me anyway. A few of my personal favorites are: “Click Clack Moo,” “The Giving Tree,” “The Five Chinese Brothers,” (a classic), and “Where the Wild Things Are.” You can find really great deals on new books online at sites like amazon or if you’re looking for African American children’s books you can check out Karibu a book store chain in the Metro DC area. Good Luck!

Do not get clothes- that’s for the mom, not the tike. (“Gee, Mama, I got a onesie…how exciting!”) Besides, they grow so fast at that age that second-hand is where it’s at. Anyway, kids love that pound-a-ball thing (not sure of actual name), by Parents Mag/Battat. It has bright non-primary colors, is not expensive, and can be found at any Target store across the nation. And, yes, it is safe. Do not sweat the first answerer; karma will take care of him/her.
