What is the proper gifting ettiquete after closing for a home?

May 21, 2010 | In: New Home Gifts

We’ll be closing the deal tomorrow and our real estate broker has gone above and beyond the call of duty, and we would like to show our appreciation as soon as we get the keys to our new home. Any suggestions for a nice gift?

I’d go for something really simple like a card and a small whatnot from Walmart. It doesn’t have to be over the top, plus it is the thought that counts.

Discretely give your broker a gift card. Brokers are not supposed to get gifts from clients, so be careful!

Referrals…every time you recommend him is like giving him a few thousand dollars.

Keep in mind, if anyone gifts anyone it should be HIM.

You paid him for the service.

I always get a housewarming gift for all of my clients that varies anywhere from $100 to $500 depending on the price of the home.

Flowers and a nice bottle of wine or a gift certificate for a night out with wife/husband

The broker is getting 3 or 6 % of the sale .
Maybe a letter to them , copyiing the office manager ,
Thanking them for their professionalism & hard work .

Even 3% is a LOT of $$$$$$ for most places ,
They should be thanking you !

It should be something simple. I agree that they are getting paid for the service but since you said that he went above and beyond maybe a nice card with a letter to his boss saying what a great job that he did. And if you are on friendly terms with him, then you could give him an invite to a housewarming BBQ or something like that. And always remember to refer anyone you know that is buying a home to him. Even if they do not do the sale for that person and he has to refer them to a collegue in another area, I believe that they get some kind of finders fee for the referal to another real estate agent.

Remember he just made thousands on your deal.

Honestly, I have to agree with the referral answer. There is no better thank you than that. In some states it is illegal for the broker to accept anything, and I do have to agree that yes they are getting paid pretty well, but a job well done is a job well done. I also like the invitation to the housewarming party, it’s a nice, personal touch kind of thank you that is always well received, plus it’s a room for him. Thats a great gift as well
