My husband & I are in our mutual friend’s wedding. What is “the acceptable going rate” these days for a wedding gift?

you sort of have to estimate what they’re paying per plate to feed you at the reception. minimum $100 each.

Depends on the wedding. More expensive weddings = more expensive gifts.
Also depends on how well you know the people. Better friends = better gifts.

I usually give a gift of about $50.00 and put $100.00 cash in an envelope. The cash is to cover the food and drinks at the reception, not reason for them to pay for my food and drinks.

It depends on your financial situation. If you are well off then you should buy a nicer gift. If you are a college student then just get what you can afford off the registry or a $20 gift card. Either way, the couple should be grateful that you gave them something, especially in this economy (I know that I would).

You are going to get a ridiculously wide range of answers, and that’s because everyone has a different idea of what’s acceptable.
In truth, what’s acceptable is what YOU can afford. It is unacceptable for you to pay $200 for a wedding gift when that would put you in the poorhouse. Look at your budget, your finances, and buy accordingly.
I typically spend more on family members than on friends. How close I am to the person affects how much I spend. My husband and I spent $200 on his brother’s wedding. We spent $80 for a friend’s wedding this last Feb. It varies.

This goes for how much you can afford. If they are registered, it should contain items from all price ranges. My husb to be and me make 45,000 together. We’re college students at that. The last gift we gave was $100.

or maybe like a gift card to a furniture store?

There is no acceptable or appropriate amount. You give what you want to give and what you can afford to give.

Whatever you feel is right. If you really don’t know the couple I’d say at least $30. But if it’s like your best friend then obviously it will be a lot more.

$100-150 no more than that… or you could group up with the entire wedding party and get them a gas grill! Great gift for a new couple!
