What is a appropriate price for a Christmas gift?

May 9, 2010 | In: Christmas Gifts

Okay, so I’m going up north with my family to my aunt’s house this Christmas. She sent me a message asking what i would like for Christmas. What is an appropriate price range to ask for a gift since she is my aunt and not like my actual parent?

I would just make a list of items that I would like and leave it up to her to decide how much she is willing to spend. However, I would try to keep my list to items under $50. If she wants to spend more, she can get multiple items…

Since you give no idea as to your aunt’s budget, consult your mom or dad–the one who is this aunt’s sibling–before answering your aunt’s question. They’ll be able to give you some guidelines that won’t stretch your aunt’s budget too far.

I personally think it’s rude to ask people what they want for Christmas. People should know you well enough to think of a good gift if they want to give one. I never know how much a person is really willing to spend, so it’s hard to decide on which gift to mention. I’d say, “Well…. if you insist, I suppose I could use a new sweater or a coffee pot.” I’d never say, “Well, I have my eye on this white gold and emerald necklace at Jarred’s.” Keep it cheap.

I would keep it around twenty dollars, with this economy.
