What do you get for someone who just had a baby? A gift for the baby or flowers?

February 22, 2010 | In: New Born & Baby Gifts

Hello,
My boyfriend’s college friend and his wife had a baby girl. I was thinking about sending them flowers since they live in a different state. Later, someone gave me the idea of sending them a baby gift.
What is the etiquette, a baby gift or flowers?

either- I would recommend sending flowers, though. it will be a nice gesture for the tired mama :)
(they probably have more than enough for the baby by now)

Insteed of sending baby a gift, you should send something for the Mum, she’s probably got lots of baby things.

either but wait till they get home. Most people send something to the hospital and it’s a pain in the butt getting it all home so just wait till they’re settled in.

really it depends, i hate flowers so i dont really like getting them. but thats me. i’d rather have a baby gift. a baby gift would be more beneficial and useful as flowers will live for like a few days if that

You know either one would be good.

But you know i think sending the mommy something would be better! I’m sure baby is getting a lot of gifts!!

Mommies need something too!!

Flowers are nice, but I got so many I didn’t know what to do with them. I suggest a baby gift or even a gift card and a nice card.

Trust me I would sent a gift-when you’re a mom you realize-oh crap this is going to be way more expensive than you realized. And even though they don’t say it-they secretly want things bought for them so they don’t have to buy stuff. I know i would be slightly dissapointed if I got flowers. All they do is die-lol i wouldn’t tell the person this-but people are selfish lol

Oh deary, always a gift for the baby. That little thing is the center of their lives and will be so for the next 20 years, but now they still enjoy it. Flowers? You can eat them yourself. Find something for the kid.

some thing nice for momma would be great. maybe a gift cert. to a salon. or some really yummy chocolates.
some thing for mom to pamper herself a bit.

and add in some wicked cute baby clothes or picture frames. moms love picture frames.

Hello,

I just had a baby and one of my colleague’s sent me a “pamper the mom” basket. In it there was a gift card for a cleaning service to come in and clean the house, there was also some nice creams, candles, magazines, ear plugs and a bottle of tylenol. It made me smile such an appropriate gift…

The baby will get tons of things from other people… pamper the mom she will truly remember that gift.

personally, i HATE getting flowers cause they just die – what a waste of money – get them something they can keep and remember you by – like a photo frame for a baby photo… or a cute outfit (in a bigger size than newborn) for the baby, a baby memory book – something easy to post in the mail

Please don’t send flowers… unless you are having them delivered to her home and not the hospital.

Carrying flowers home in a vase while juggling a newborn and waddling with stitches SUCKS. And it usually manages to spill in the car…

Go with the baby gift.

I would suggest some balloons with a teddy bear.
Because;
-Flowers may cause an allergy
-It is hard to choose right gift.

Good luck!

I’d probably get a gift rather than flowers because it lasts longer. Given they live in a different state you could buy something online and use their address as the postal address to save you having to get to the post office.

I’m in the process of creating a baby gift idea website if you’d like to get some ideas on what to get! It’s not selling anything at this stage, just ideas for people who don’t have a baby yet.
