Question about proper etiquette for expressing sympathy to the family of deceased.?

Is sending flowers to the family appropriate? Gift baskets of food? Sympathy cards? I don’t live anywhere near them, so I can’t run over and put a wreath on the grave or give an Imam money to make prayers. What would be the polite and helpful thing to do? (The person who died is my daughter in law’s dad.
That sounds like a good idea. I am not a Muslim though – just an Agnostic Theist. I can browse through the Koran. Maybe something will jump out at me. I can write it into the cards I bought.
Hi Sue. He was a Muslim, and he did love to garden. I wonder if a tree could be planted in a local park in his honor.

Would it be appropriate to put money in a sympathy card for a professor?

My mother’s colleaque lost a son recently and she wants to put a monetary gift in the sympathy card my family is sending him. Is this ok to do or should we jsut send a card alone?
Alright I guess it is a cultural thing. My mother (african american) lost both her parents recently, my dad lost his brother and dad within the past year, and family members will send money to help with traveling to the funeral, expenses, etc.

I included his occupation because my mother is a professor as well, so it may be a different type of relationship than in other professions.

Do you think the judge will have sympathy for my mom?

My mom is being charged with embezelling $250,000 from a large insurance company. Her boss (an older, very wealthy man), let her use company credit cards to buy occasional outfits for company trips, he bought her a pool and hot tub for her yearly bonus with company credit cards, and when the company found out about it, he said he had no idea about the charges. She has like, 30 something counts against her, alot of them she has actual receipts for legitamite purchases, but if she goes to court, each count could cost her 3-6 years each. Although she could prove that she did everything with her bosses permission and knowledge, has receipts for about $20,000 of the purchases, and witnesses that saw how her boss lavished her with gifts, the risk of a high sentence is too scary to go to court, so she’s signing a plea bargain. The plea is for 18 months. I’m 17, my brother and sister are 12 and 8- do you think the judge will sympathize and give her a lesser sentence? She has no prior records.
By the way, the $20,000 in receipts is just what she had happened to have from the past few months that she hadn’t turned in yet- the remaining amount in receipts she had turned into her boss, but there were receipts for all $250,000 of it, that he “never got”.

We suspect that a co-worker lied about having cancer in order to get sympathy, gifts and time off.?

She quit today in a fury of new lies which were exposed after she left. She did not use the work medical insurance, she was on her parents insurance (even though she’s over 21 she could do that while she was a student). Is there any way we could find out definitively if she really had cancer?
in reply to one of the answers: it wasnt an office, it was a small school. and there was nothing else wrong with her. she took 2 months medical leave for cancer while the rest of us broke out backs covering for her. we are a small school with not much money. we gave her 2 months paid. if she was lying, we’d like to recoup that money if for only to teach her that lying has serious and tangible consequences. not to mention that we have real cancer survivors on staff who reached out to her with money, gifts, thier time, cooking for her and all that. she’s a liar and liars shouldn’t be allowed to get away with lying. they should be confronted at the very least.

Sympathy gifts?

My friend’s daughter passed away and I’d like to do something in recognition of her. I considered flowers, but was told by a friend that in her experience as the grieving family member that you get many of those and that many were redonated or thrown out.

What would be another good idea to just show I care? I am considering a nice fruit basket, but are there any other creative ideas? I had the suggestion of a monetary donation to the family, but I’m not sure my friend would be comfortable with that.

my friends little sister just died and as a class we thought it’d be appropriate to get our friend somethig to show our sympathies.. he is a HUGE hockey fan.. game geek, loves to read etc.. we dont’ want him to get flowers or anything like that beucase we want to show we actually thought about it and put effort into it

is it necessary to send a thank you note when someone sends a sympathy card?

my father passed away last week and we are sending out thank you notes, and we are wondering about this. we are obviously sending thank yous to people who stopped by, brought food etc, or sent a gift of money. but what about if they just sent a card?
