One of my co-workers gave everyone in our room a little cup filled with candy for christmas (We all work in different rooms). Anyway, I said thank you and such and mentioned to her that I should get her a gift. But she was like “No, you don’t have to do that”. I got her something anyway. But I wanted to get her a gift before she even gave us something. I don’t think anybody else is giving her a gift. I’m just wondering if it’ll seem like a sympathy gift, cuz it’s really not. What do you think?

I think you are a nice person, if you are worried that she will think of it that way, get everyone in your work room to sign a card or something so she will know it wasn’t just you, even if it was just you.

Give a gift only if you want to. I work in an office of about 30 employees and gave small gifts to two individuals who consistenly help me throughout the year. I received a gift from my boss and gave him a card. Do what makes you happy and don’t worry about what others think.
