I received $250.00 as a Graduation gift from a family friend who is having financial problems. What can I do that will be polite and respectful of their financial situation?

Wow, that’s a toughy. If you return it, you risk offending them. Honestly, since financial situations are a pride issue for most, I would just thank them profusely for the gift and enjoy. They obviously wanted you to have it.

accept it with grace, they probably save for it, and obviously wanted to give it to you, giving it back may actually hurt their feelings, more than it hurt their wallet.

say thanks, but no thanks, and give it back. send it so they cannot insist you keep it.

It was a gift. Do no return it. In your thank you letter don’t even mention the hardship they’re having. Just say something like, “Thank you very much for the card and money you sent me for my graduation. It was very thoughtful of you and it will be put to good use,” etc.

Do send a thank you card state-ting how thoughtful it was. Then get together with your mother and invite the person for a special dinner. Make it a nice home made dinner and toast them a special friend.
