I need meaningful gift ideas for the two daughters (ages 8 and 5) of a friend who lost his mother last night. They were very close to their grandmother and we are close to them. Their father grew up with my husband and our children have played together since birth..I do not want to send the girls flowers and I do not have any pics of their grandmother so don’t suggest those. But I would like to give them something sweet and meaningful so they know we love them and are thinking of them. Please give me some great ideas.

Offer to make a quilt out of the clothing of the grandma, if you can get some of the clothes. It is a beautiful and meaningful gift, and will be a wonderful gesture. If you are lucky enough to get some clothes with pockets on them, sometimes just putting your hand into the pocket that your loved one had their hand in is a meaningful gesture, so if you do this, be sure to keep a pocket on the quilt.

i don’t really think that would be appropriate to give material gift at times like these…good gesture would be enough…

There are books designed especially for children who may be experiencing grief. Compassion books has a complete section with children’s grief books. Maybe put together a care package for each girl with things they would like such as toys, dolls, etc. and sneak in one of these books. They even have coloring books dealing with grief.
