I need an affordable housewarming gift for a friend!?

May 26, 2010 | In: New Home Gifts

I would like to make something for my friend’s housewarming party. Any DIY ideas will be appreciated!
I was thinking of making like a movie basket with a “family friendly” movie, candy, popcorn, in a homemade ticket bowl. She has all the basics- appliances, soft-goods, etc. I don’t want to spend more than $25.

They don’t need any homespun crap. Just give them a gift certificate to Home Depot, Lowes, Williams Sonoma, Sur La Table, Bed Bath and Beyond or any other home store. It’ll be more appreciated that some silly toilet paper cozy.

You could personalize a picture frame or photo album…

Gift certificates make great gifts & your friends will have fun shopping for just what they’d like to purchase with it. I’m glad to hear that housewarmings are still alive & well. :)

I like to get those plain terra cotta pots and saucers and paint them a color that I know the person likes and sometimes make designs or stencilling on it and plant a nice little houseplant in it.

I use acrylic paints to do the work and then seal it inside and out with spray-on laquer – be sure to get a good coat around everywhere so that the water will not ruin your work – especially important on the inside and the saucer, but the outside needs it too. Another nice touch is if you use the paint that has glitter in it, it can look more fancy, if that is the person’s style.

Of all the things I have made for people, these seem to be a favorite.

Good luck and whatever you make, I hope they like it. I have always loved it when my friends make something for me themselves instead of buying everything already made.

Do you sew, if so make some place mats and pot holders that match.
you can also go to http://www.hgtv.com and check out the projects there that have step by step directions for making things. also check out TLC’s website, they have projects there too.
last option is almost every town has a dollar tree or dollar store. Get some picture frames for a dollar each, get some candles and holders for a dollar each, get some nice snack bowls for a dollar, get some vases and some colored stones to go in there that match her rooms in her home for a dollar each., you can even get some nice kitchen utensils. hope this helps.

I already like your idea!

Here’s an idea that I did one year and it was under $25. I went to a thrift store and bought a really clean, like new wicker basket and then went to a discount store (either Ross or TJ Max Home Goods) and bought 2 bath towels, to hand towels and 2 washcloths. I also purchased some candles and a lavender sachet.

Roll each towel and tie them with a nice satin ribbon. After you place everything nicely in the basket… tie a huge ribbon around it.

I think the entire gift set works well… they can use the basket for storage or as a trashcan, the towels always come in handy, candles and the sachet are great – everyone can use them to relax… as for the ribbons, I’m sure they can reuse it for future gifts.

I think a fire extinguisher is a good gift. If your friend ever needs it, you will both be happy you got it.

It’s not “cutesy” at all but it does say “I want to help. especially when things go wrong.”

A good idea which we received as a gift was a large collage frame for family pictures with a disposable camera, for both you can get for under $25.00 ?

Several good ideas here, but I really like the fire extinguisher idea above. No one ever thinks of that. It’s perfect. I recommend 10 points for avnurd.

If a woman lives in the home: A White Barn or Yankee Scented Candle.

If only a man lives in the house: I really like that fire extinguisher idea someone mentioned above.
