How to express sympathy?

March 11, 2010 | In: Sympathy Gifts

My friend is a teacher. A student lost his grandfather right after the end of the school year. The student is 11. She also taught his brother who is 16 now. In addition, one of her coworkers lost her mother at the same time. She wants to do something to express her sympathy other than a card or letter. She isn’t close enough to either family to visit. What gift could she send through the mail to let them know she’s thinking of them? In the first family, the boys are 11 and 16.

Gifts are inappropriate, other than sending flowers to the funeral or bringing food if you attend a wake or other reception.

Since she’s not “close enough” to them, trust me — a heartfelt card would be greatly appreciated. It’s a great comfort to know that others are thinking of them and/or praying for them.

Send a teddy bear to the little kid, flowers or a blanket for the other coworker, but really a card or letter goes a long way

When someone close to you dies what you want from other people is just to know they care and are there if you need them. Knowing this, I think a nice handwritten letter instead of a card would be quite meaningful. Handwritten gestures are increasingly rare these days so they make a heartfelt impression. In it she could write that she is thinking about them as they are going through this and that she is always available to them if they need a friend to lean on. My favorite thing to send along on such occasions is a fruit bouquet. She could send the letter with the fruit bouquet or maybe in lieu of that a cookie gram. Most people really appreciate something nice and refreshing to nibble on or something sweet like the cookies amongst the sea of casseroles people drop off. Below are 2 links to show you what I’m referring to:

Good luck :)

Cards with handwritten notes including something nice or funny they told you about the deceased in the past, how she knows they will miss that person, and that she will keep them (those left) in her heart and thoughts would be nice. Separate cards for each boy would be especially nice. Other than that, sending flowers or plants is all that is appropriate.

through the mail? a prayer card would be nice. Or she could order flowers or an angel figurine or throw (depending on how much she wants to spend) and have it delivered.
