That has to be the dumbest reasoning I’ve ever heard. The fact is, the person who discovered and named the substance did NOT put a second “I” in the word. Regardless of how some backward culture decided to spell it after it was named, the actual spelling only has one “I”. Any other spelling is just a colloquialism and is therefore not the established spelling, so it does NOT matter that Mexico spells it that way. It’s still wrong.
