I would like to know what the proper gift giving etiquette is for a high school graduation for my brother’s second wife’s daughter. We just received a graduation announcement for this girl’s upcoming graduation. My brother has been married to his second wife for about 3 years, they live across the country, and I’ve only met the daughter approximately 5 times. Are we required to send a gift? I feel she’s not really “family” and I barely know her. What is the proper etiquette in this situation?

You follow the same etiquette as you would for any other high school student that you received a graduation announcement for. There isn’t “special” etiquette for a step niece. Send a card with $25.

at the very least, send a card with your regards and congradulations.
if you family is able, the standard is typically a $25 gift. personally, i would prefer cash or check so that it can be used to pay for school books, which are about $600 a semester which is difficult for college student’s to afford

I wouldn’t, just send a nice card, that should be fine and she will be getting tons of gifts so don’t worry about it.

5 times in 3 years? That’s more often than I get to see my brother’s daughters, who are blood relatives. Be a sport and send the kid 25.00 if you can afford to- if not for her sake, then your brother’s. She’s HIS family now, so by default, yours too.
