Drawing in Photoshop CS4: Beautiful Things

January 4, 2012 | In: Birthday Gifts

Birthday gift for one of my favorite people. No, this time it’s not Kaylink. x3 Though she is definitely on the list. No, this is for another of my favorite people- xSinginSilencex is her Youtube screenname, TheSilentSnow is her DA. She’s a wonderfully beautiful person who’s helped me in times I absolutely needed it, often times without needing to be asked. She’s a pleasure to know and I’m always happen to see her status message pop up in my Yahoo. So here’s a gift for her birthday, which was today. Took me three hours and didn’t come out anything close to how I wanted it, but I enjoyed it anyway. It was just pure “let me give her something pretty”, but my perfectionism was expecting more than I could put out. BUT WHATEVER Happy Birthday Tahly Anrui, the snow lion depicted, belongs to xsinginsilencex. I take no credit for her or her design what so ever, and I want everyone to be aware of that. The artwork is mine however. Please do not copy, heavily reference, edit, repost, reuse or redistribute. Song is Beautiful Things by DJ Tiesto featuring Andain I lay no claim to it or its production, and use it here without intent for profit.

@madmidna
You’ll never? get better at art if you’re unwilling to try new things. If you want your work, your life, anything to change, you must first change yourself.

@MoonFang2013
So then why ask me? Why not? Google search for tutorials if you only want to know how the program works? Forgive me if I find it hard to believe that that was not the motive behind your question but, if I am truly mistaken, I apologize if I came off as rude in any way.

But seriously. There are whole websites dedicated to Photoshop tutorials, there are even books published almost annually about how to use it. They are much better resources than random people on Youtube.

@Avyris umm thats not quite what i meant, ya know. Of course by practicing your art gets better cuz im an artist too. ._. im just asking about? the program, not how to draw your way.

@MoonFang2013
I use a brush and my hand.
There is no magical tool that magically gives you pretty artwork. Some of it- almost all of it,? actually, is just hard work and practice. Photoshop is a tool, not a short cut.

@Avyris Yeah, I find cell shading… really hard for some reason xD Well all shading is hard for me lol.

Well thanks for? replying ^^ I love the drawing by the way~ I love the contrast between such a powerful creature like a lion and the peacful nature of the art. And the lighting is so pretty <3

@SenseiOfPower
Well… no. I honestly consider? my usual style of shading soft, not cell. My techniques involve lots of layering, blending, and smoothing, with perhaps some elements of cell shading for the sake of ease and time. Cell shading is faster than less complex, good for animation. But soft shading is more fluid and fun to create. I generally can use either or, but default to soft shading because of its possibility for variety, detail, drama and expressiveness.

Hey Avy!
I’ve just noticed you don’t tend to do cell shading a? lot. Just wondering if there was any particular reason for that?

@FRjakfan
Yes, it’s a program you can download for? free called Free Auto Screen Recorder. All you need is a little space on your computer (and you have to be using a PC as it does not work for Mac’s) and a Google search to find it.

@Nariathemoon
I do not know. But it does make my computer somewhat laggy when run along side a major program like Photoshop. But it’s free so you can perhaps try it and? see.

Could always simply use MS Paint instead. A much more simple alternative to Photoshop.

Hmmm… Question about the recording program you use, have any idea how many scripts it runs? I only have a laptop so I’m? not sure if it can handle running Photoshop and the recording program without acting up. It’s a bit of an old computer model.

@lauriestrode47
Actually, by that logic, they are actually giant mongooses.

Hyenas are? their own genus- Hyeanidae, completely separate from any other family of species. They’re not dogs, not cats, not bears, not fish, they’re hyenas- plain and simple. HOWEVER, they are most closely related to civets and mongooses… But only in the manner that dogs and wolves are most closely related to bears.

So nice try but over generalization is a logical fallacy. x3

@Avyris actually, and i’m not tryna sound all no it all in your face here, but your fursona as a hyena is actually a ‘big cat’ seeings hyenas are more closely related? to cats rather than dogs. just putting that out there :3

@the1stToboeKage
Multiply shading is actually much more flexible and malleable than using the burn tool. I just use a brush on low opacity to build up the gradual shading effect. Most people who use a multiply layer set their brush on 100% opacity and use on consistent tone in what most people call “cell shading”. However this technique is extremely limited and extremely lazy on their part. There? is much more flexibility available in the technique… as is true of most Photoshop techniques.
