My best freind is about to be a father. I want to make his baby a Heirloom gift- something to keep through the years and hand down, someday telling his child “Your uncle made this for you before you were even born. Its very special.” I’m pretty handy so I thought something like a Wooden Mobile, Maybe Rocking Horse, etc. Any ideas? Something that a guy can give a guy- not something soft a blanket.

Oh! Can you make a wooden Noah’s ark, with the carved animals and Noah and his wife? We got one of those for my son, my Grandpa made it for him, and its one of my favorite things he’s ever gotten!

Maybe blocks of some sort. If you know they are having a boy you could make little boy toys like a hammer and pegs to pound in a block. A rocking horse would be awesome. If they picked a name already you could make initials to hang on the baby’s wall.

What is your friends passion? Does he love airplanes? Trucks? In my case, my husband loves planes(old war planes) so my father made my son a Spitfire to hang on his wall with his name painted down the side of it!
If he is having a girl, a rocking horse would be nice, or even a child’s table and chair set.(I still have mine which was my grand fathers when he was a little boy)

If you think you are capable, a cradle would be nice. You can’t find decent ones at the stores, they are all so cheap and flimsy and made of plastic. Read up on safety codes and guidelines or find a plan online. a cradle is definitely a family heirloom item that will not get trashed.

A toy box, with lid. The baby can use it to keep toys in and pull up on as he learns to stand. A bigger kid can keep hats/ mitts/ school bag etc in it., it can be a bench. It can stay in his room, or at the door, or the living room.
If the decor changes it can be painted. But if it’s a nicely finished wood, it’ll look good in any decor.
Look for non toxic finishes, and find plans that have a lid that won’t slam on little fingers (they love opening/closing stuff).
That is a really nice idea for your friend!
